Empica film shortlisted for award

A documentary produced by our in-house video team to mark 25 years of the iconic ship The Matthew has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The 30-minute film, which follows the history of the modern Matthew from its design and build in the 1990s right up to the present day, is a finalist in the documentary category of the RS FilmFest awards.

Narrated by broadcast journalist Sally Challoner, the documentary has been produced by Empica in association with The Matthew of Bristol Trust as a learning resource for schools.

The film is part of a wider educational project to celebrate the Matthew’s 25th anniversary and the 525th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage across the Atlantic on the original Matthew in 1497.

It was made by our in-house filmmaker Grace Fox who followed a year in the life of The Matthew, capturing stunning footage of the ship around Bristol Harbour and out on the River Avon.

The film includes interviews with the captain, Rick Wakeham, some of the colourful characters who make up the volunteer crew, and members of the public who share their memories of The Matthew’s 1997 voyage to Newfoundland.

Martin Powell, managing director of Empica, said: “We’re delighted that the documentary has been shortlisted for this prestigious film award.

“It’s the culmination of a two-year project during which we captured significant moments in the life of The Matthew. We started filming during the pandemic when the ship was unable to host the public.

“This meant we were able to capture the team carrying out additional maintenance tasks at Underfall Yard and Albion Dock during lockdown. The film includes unique footage of the ship’s mast being removed for repair for the first time since it was launched.”

The winners of this year’s RS FilmFest will be announced at a special event at BessellScotts, Stoke Gifford, Bristol on 25th May 2023. For more information and tickets please go to www.filmfreeway.com/thersfilmfest/tickets
