Bristol Cathedral Choir School student Momo spent a few days work experience with the Empica team. She shadowed many of our activities and did some real work on the up-coming International Paramedic Day campaign on July 8. Here is her take on what it was like to step into the world of work - and public relations! We enjoyed supporting her in her learning.

Before coming to Empica for my work experience as a Year 12 student, I had little knowledge of what PR was and the many different areas it covers but it appeared exciting to me and I was curious to find out more.
Although I only spent three days working with Empica, I have learnt a lot from observing, interacting with and working alongside the team and have enjoyed working in a warm and welcoming environment.
My overall experience working here has been interesting and informative as I was able to sit in various meetings with clients, offering different perspectives of how Empica manages its relationships with them.
By being inquisitive, it has allowed me to gain a wider outlook on how individuals deal with situations and what they have experienced working with a PR agency.
What I have learnt
In this short amount of time, I have discovered that PR is more than just media coverage as it explores all aspects of communication and content creation through graphics and video as well as forms of advertisement and promotion.
Initially, I did not realise the amount of preparation and organisation required for a project that occurs months in advance; for example, I had the privilege of working on the International Paramedics Day campaign, which is held annually on the 8th of July.
Despite this being a few months away, the preparations for the day are well underway and I was able to help with ideas, wording and graphics for the social media posts as part of the content planning.
I was also able to sit in a meeting with the client, which enabled me to observe how the planning is conducted as well as the interaction between the client and agency. It helped me to understand that building strong relationships with the client is important in working successfully and effectively.
As I am studying Graphics as one of my A Levels, I was able to incorporate some of these skills into designing social media assets for International Paramedics Day. Due to this correlation, I have realised that I am able to combine qualities of design with writing and gaining more knowledge of storytelling, something which I am quite interested in.
What I will do next
Whilst I am still unsure on my path for the future, by gaining valuable experience working with Empica, it has helped me to understand the sector of work a lot more and what it entails as well as how different areas are covered.
It has opened more options for me, which is useful as I am struggling to figure out a career path much like many who pursue English as a career.
Therefore, I would like to conduct further research into PR, especially as I enjoy both the creatives and writing, skills which are used constantly within this job as I have discovered.
I am extremely grateful to Empica for this opportunity and allowing me to shadow their work, in addition to assisting with a campaign which I have gained knowledge on. I am looking forward to using this experience as a chance to develop my understanding of this type of job and possibly take it on as a career in the future!
