This summer we welcomed Swansea University student Jess Cook to Empica for a three-week internship. Here are Jess’ thoughts on her time with us.
With my final year of university looming my internship at Empica came at the perfect time to gain real industry experience.
Empica is one of Bristol’s leading PR agencies. MD Martin Powell, with over 30 years’ experience in PR, leads a team of both traditional and digital PR experts. The mixture of ages, interests, personalities and expertise of Empica’s line-up is what ensures great results for clients so for me to be welcomed as part of the Empica family was a huge honour.
I wanted to gain real experience and learn skills to give myself a step in the right direction for future job roles. The team guided me through a list of tasks and offered real insight into the industry.
My role included drafting press releases, sitting in on client meetings, scheduling and creating social media posts, engaging with audiences through social media platforms, becoming familiar with industry standard technology and designing a quarterly e-newsletter for one of Empica’s clients.
The internship introduced me to an exciting array of clients; Cattle Country Adventure Park, Bakers Dolphin, Clarke Willmott Solicitors, Smith and Williamson Accountants and ETP Property, to name but a few. Meeting with and speaking to clients directly offered great experience covering business to business and business to consumer communications.
In a world where there are less intimate client meetings and more email communication, it has become even harder to maintain such strong relationships with clients. But Empica’s consistent loyalty, personal touch and specialist team sets them apart.
Although the emphasis on my internship was gaining knowledge of the public relations landscape, the atmosphere, team, clients and conversation allowed me to learn more about the importance of building relationships.
